Surrendering your pet(s) to TCRAS:
TCRAS is a small, limited-access shelter/rescue; we work hard to give every animal that enters our doors the love, time and medical care they need to be ready for their new home. Each pet is microchipped, fully vaccinated and spayed or neutered. Our guests stay with us until they find the right family for them, no matter how long it takes and even if it takes a few tries. Our guests are part of our family until they find one of their own. However, due to limited space and resources, not every pet is able to be admitted to the shelter.
TCRAS does consider all requests for pet surrender; preference is given to pets adopted from TCRAS.
If we determine TCRAS is not going to be able to accept your pet, we will provide you with other options and services to try to help you find the right solution for you and your pet. Other options can include in-home training to help with problem behaviors, referrals to other rescue groups that may be able to help (ie – breed specific, older dogs), options for a foster home or other possibilities, depending on circumstance.
Because we are a non-profit shelter funded entirely by donations, TCRAS does require a surrender fee to help cover costs of medical treatment and care when your pet is accepted to TCRAS.
What to do next:
We understand that parting with your pet can be a painful and difficult decision. To help us find the best new home for your pet, please fill out the Surrender form completely and accurately. It is important that we know why you will be surrendering your pet to us and any information you believe we should know about your pet ahead of time. Your open and honest answers are necessary and appreciated.
All surrenders have to be made in person at TCRAS. Please call ahead to let us know you will be coming. 719-686-7707

- Filling out the surrender form does not guarantee that TCRAS will be able to re-home your pet, but we will do our best to provide you with other options if TCRAS is not the right fit.
- TCRAS may contact you with more questions to help determine if your pet is appropriate for the program.
- TCRAS may ask to have the pet come in for an evaluation before being accepted into the program.
- If your pet is accepted for placement at TCRAS, a “Relinquishment” form with complete history of the animal must be completed and surrender fees will be processed. Any medical or behavior records are appreciated at this time.

Maybe our Paw in Hand Behavior Modification Program can help?
This program supports families that are struggling with a furry family member’s challenging behavior and feel that surrendering their pet is the only option available. This program is open to Teller County residents and their companion pet, even if the cat or dog was not adopted from TCRAS. |
