Tips and Tricks for new Pet Owners

When you are adding an animal to your house hold there are some key things to remember to make sure you and your animal are off to the best start. 
  • Let your animal adjust to you before you show them the rest of the world. They don't understand what is happening and it can be very stressful. Introducing them to their new home safe a slow is the best way to do it. While you may want to show them off take it slow and let me adjust to you.
  • Watch them closely for about the first two to three weeks. If you are adopting an animal from a shelter they have been exposed to a lot of different elements. It can take up to two weeks for any symptoms to show, if your new pet seems to not be feeling well take them into your local veterinarian to be examined. 
  • Always use positive reinforcement  when showing your new animal what you expect of them. They do not know what the routine of the household is. This take times and with positivity and time you will build a great bond with your new furry family member. 
Please take things really slow and steady with your new family member. This is important to build the bonds that will last a life time. A rule of thumb to follow is the 3-3-3 rule when adopting adopting a new furry family member.
  • First 3 days: They are going to feel overwhelmed with their life change. They may take some time to get a full apatite. Give them a safe space to figure out the lay of the land and they will begin to come out of their shell.
  • 3 weeks: The animal is starting to settle and getting the lay of the land. They are just now getting the feel for the routine of the home, and this is when you  may start to see unwanted behavior. This is a good time to be connected with a trainer to help you through these potentially challenging times.  
  • 3 Months:  Your animal is finally completely comfortable with your home. You have been working hard at building trust, and it is showing.  From here the relationship will grow and blossom and be a happy household.
