You may add TCRAS as a beneficiary to receive assets such as insurance policies and retirement plans. This can be done from forms that are provided by the insurance company or retirement plan, and is totally separate from your will. This makes it very easy to do, periodically adjust, and help support TCRAS.
If your estate is large, you may establish a Charitable Remainder Trust that you can fund with cash and/or appreciated securities and receive a charitable deduction from the IRS. This provides you with a means to provide you or another individual with an annual amount from the trust and then upon the termination of the trust, the remainder is provided to TCRAS.
You may add a paragraph in your will or living trust that leaves a bequest to the Teller County Regional Animal Shelter (TCRAS). This bequest can be money or a percentage of your estate, a tangible gift from the estate, or other item dependent on any events specified in your will or living trust.
You may fund a gift to TCRAS in the memory of a person or beloved pet using cash or appreciated securities. This gift will be a lasting tribute that will enable TCRAS to continue to make a difference in the lives of so many animals.
Preparing for the Unexpected
TCRAS often provides services to people who have not planned ahead for unforeseen emergencies or other events such as fire, natural disaster, illness, incapacitation, or even untimely death. The Humane Society of the United States has created a fact sheet which provides an excellent summary of actions that can be taken to ensure that your pets are cared for in the event of an emergency or unforeseen circumstance. This includes easy steps that can be informally set up as well as more formal instruments such as trusts and wills that can continue to provide for your pets’ care after an unexpected accident, illness, or even death.
